Small Groups Church Website Banner

Dear Emmanuel Family,

In just over a week, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving.  As a church, we have much to be thankful for: God’s gift of love in Jesus and the Holy Spirit; a community of brothers and sisters with whom to share and serve in Christ’s kingdom; and God’s ongoing provision for each of us and our families.  As elders, we are thankful for the financial stability we have experienced over the past two years. Although we have not met our budget, we have had a small surplus each year as a result of reduced expenses.

We would like to encourage us to contribute toward a Special Thanksgiving Offering to provide us with a more secure foundation for the coming year. This would be over and above your regular tithes and offerings.  Giving to God’s work is an act of worship that we are privileged to participate in, but it is also a discipline we cultivate in response to God’s faithfulness and generosity to us.  Sometimes that’s a stretch for some of us, but the Scripture reminds us that all that we are and have belong to God. We are mere stewards of his gifts.

We would like to receive the Special Thanksgiving Offering on Sunday, October 8 (Thanksgiving Sunday). We recognize that not everyone will be able to gather with us on that day, so we would encourage you to either give online (through your bank or through the church’s website) or to bring your Special Offering on one of the subsequent Sundays in October.

This Thanksgiving we are going to designate the Care Fund contributions from Thanksgiving Sunday to helping those who have experienced devastation due to the recent hurricanes, as well as the earthquake in Mexico.

Our plan is to partner with MCC Saskatoon (Mennonite Central Committee) in their initiative to pack 606 relief kits.  Our goal is to finance at least 25 relief kits, which will go out directly to those affected by the hurricanes.

You may contribute financially to the project, or if you wish, you can buy items from the list below and bring them to the church on Thanksgiving Sunday (October 8).  If you will be away on Thanksgiving Sunday, you can bring items for the relief kits prior to October 8.  We will be packing the relief kits as part of the connection Thanksgiving Sunday service.  Everyone is welcome to come to the connection, participate in the service, and help pack the kits.

Here is a list of what goes into each relief kit.

(NEW items only, in original packaging)

*  4 large bars bath soap

* 1 plastic bottle shampoo (380–710 ml; place in re-sealable plastic bag)

* 4 large bars Sunlight laundry soap (can be found at Superstore)

* 4 adult-size toothbrushes

* 4 new bath towels (medium weight, dark or bright colours)

* 2 wide-tooth combs (15 cm – 20 cm)

* 1 fingernail clipper

* 1 box adhesive bandages (minimum 40 count, assorted)

* 1 package sanitary pads (18-24 count thin maxi)

As we seek to discern how to respond to these invitations, let us remember these words from the apostle Paul: ‘You must each decide in your heart how much to give.  And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”  And God will generously provide all you need’ (2 Corinthians 9:7-8).    May we ask the Holy Spirit to guide us (and possible stretch us) through this process so that we may grow deeper in our dependence on God.

Blessings,
